WE PARKED IN A LARGE parking lot that was fairly empty, since it was the middle of the week and early enough people would still be eating breakfast. Most of the cars we saw parked up by Salish Lodge which overlooked the falls.
âAre you opposed to a hike, or would you rather just try to see it from the road?â Jeremy glanced at me before shutting off the truck.
âOh, a hike, definitely.â I didnât wait for him. I just hopped out of the truck and swung my camera bag onto my shoulder. The air was fresh and filled with pine and fir scents. I wanted to breathe it in for days and days. I didnât think Iâd ever grow tired of the smells of Washington. At least, not where we were at.
I walked beside Jeremy as we left the parking lot to head up to the falls. My camera bag swung softly at my side, hitting my waist every couple steps. We came to a rocky incline and Jeremy reached out his hand, taking my fingers in his without a double thought.
As my fingers entwined with his, I realized how natural it felt to touch him.
The hike in wasnât hard as we followed the carefully railed trails down to the side of the circular lookout platforms. Metal rungs tight together kept people from falling the two-hundred-and-sixty-eight feet down to the riverbed below. Rock outcroppings dotted the wide cavern that housed the river and mist rose into the air from the twin falls.
Green foliage intermixed with the outcroppings and leaves and branches overgrew the tops of the trail railings.
We walked side-by-side, taking in the scenery, and every once in a while, I would lift my camera, pause, and take a shot of something or anything that grabbed my eye.
âHave you ever been married before? Your answer on the profile was more like not applicable.â He matched my pace and walked beside me, softly swinging our hands between us when I wasnât shooting a picture.
I looked at the trail ahead of us. Twisting my lips to the side, I tried to decide how much to tell him. âActually, I was engaged to be married. The day I clicked I do to marry you, I walked out of my wedding to him.â How did that make me sound? I was a little biased on the whole thing so I wasnât sure if I sounded more like a loser or more like I belonged in the looney bin.
Jeremy stopped and gently grabbed my arm until I faced him and stopped as well. He squinted at me as if he hadnât heard right. âWhat do you mean you left your wedding?â I hadnât known him long enough to recognize judgment in his tone. The possibility scared me.
I tried to avoid his charismatic gaze and looked everywhere. After a long drawn out thirty seconds of silence, I finally looked directly at him. Regret wasnât an option at that point, but guilt wasnât out of the picture. âI walked out of my wedding.
